Abstract: A transfer system for molten metal e.g. a gating system for feeding a mould is surrounded by compacted particulate material e.g. sand. The system comprises lengths of refractory pipe joined end-to-end and according to the invention to prevent ingress of sand, the lengths are placed in an outer sheath e.g. a cardboard tube, which is sealed at its ends. For junctions the invention provides a junction box having extensions which taper away from the box and onto which the ends of the sheath may be fitted.
