The present invention is directed to a method for the casting of molten metal in a form-sustaining body. The method comprising passing a molten metal through an annular mold, extracting heat from a form-sustaining body of metal and wherein the method includes the step of extracting heat on mutually opposing sides of the form-sustaining body by directing liquid coolant onto the body. The coolant is discharged in different amounts onto different portions of the body such that thermal stresses arising from contraction of the body are balanced from side to side of the body.
