ABSTRACT A catalyst for the purification of motor vehicle exhaust gases comprising a copper component comprising at least one copper oxide carried on a support and at least one oxide from Category (i) and/or Category (ii), which categories are defined as follows: (i) an oxide of a metal which is a lanthanide or a metal from Group IIA and/or IIb of the Mendeleev periodic table; (ii) an oxide of a transition metal in which the transition metal is in a first oxidation state having a second, higher, oxidation state at an energy level close to that of the first oxidation state.
