A catalyst which comprises: a surface catalyst layer having a catalyst ingredient (A) comprising at least one member selected among solid acids and solid acids having, deposited thereon, an oxide and/or ions of at least one element selected among vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, and manganese; and an inner catalyst layer comprising a combination of a noble-metal catalyst ingredient (B) comprising at least one member selected among platinum, rhodium, palladium, and oxides of these and a catalyst ingredient (C) comprising ceria, praseodymium oxide, or an oxide mixture and/or composite oxide of at least two elements selected among cerium, zirconium, praseodymium, neodymium, terbium, samarium, gadolinium, and lanthanum. The catalyst is for use in catalytically reducing nitrogen oxides contained in an exhaust gas after a fuel is fed and burned under periodic rich/lean conditions; the resultant exhaust gas is brought into contact with the catalyst to catalytically reduce the nitrogen oxides. The method comprises bringing nitrogen oxides into contact with the catalyst to catalytically reduce the nitrogen oxides.

L'invention concerne un catalyseur comprenant : une couche catalytique de surface ayant un ingrédient catalytique (A) comprenant au moins un élément choisi parmi les acides solides et les acides solides sur lesquels sont déposés un oxyde et/ou des ions d'au moins un élément choisi parmi le vanadium, le tungstène, le molybdène, le cuivre, le fer, le cobalt, le nickel et le manganèse ; et une couche catalytique intérieure comprenant une combinaison d'un ingrédient catalytique à base de métal noble (B) comprenant au moins un élément choisi parmi le platine, le rhodium, le palladium et leurs oxydes, et un ingrédient catalytique (C) comprenant de l'oxyde de cérium, de l'oxyde de praséodyme ou un mélange d'oxyde et/ou un oxyde composite d'au moins deux éléments choisis parmi le cérium, le zirconium, le praséodyme, le néodyme, le terbium, le samarium, le gadolinium et le lanthane. Le catalyseur s'utilise pour réduire catalytiquement les oxydes d'azote contenus dans des gaz d'échappement après alimentation par un combustible et combustion dans des conditions périodiquement riches et pauvres ; le gaz d'échappement résultant est mis en contact avec le catalyseur de façon à réduire catalytiquement les oxydes d'azote. Le procédé comprend la mise en contact des oxydes d'azote avec le catalyseur de façon à réduire catalytiquement les oxydes d'azote.
