Abstract A catalyst composition for converting syngas into dimethyl ether comprises co-precipitated Cu, Zn and Al components, preferably as their oxides, amounts such that Al/(Cu+Zn) is not less than 0.1 and Cu/Zn is 0.2 to 5.0, and an acidic dehydrating component, preferably gamma-alumine. Syngas is converted into dimethyl ether over this catalyst at 250 to 400°C, and the aged catalyst can be oxidatively regenerated at 250 to 540°C.
