Benzene is alkylated with C20-C24alpha olefins in the presence of a solid, aciditic tin-containing or zirconia-containing catalyst, such as ZrO2-H2SO4, ZrO2-WO3, or SnO2-H2SO4. The catalyst is activated prior to use and the activated catalyst is used without exposure to atmospheric water.
