A solution of a chromium compound is impregnated into a silica-alumina carrier made of alumina and containing 1 to 5 weight % of silica relative to the weight of the carrier, thereby to obtain a decomposing catalyst carrying 10 to 15 weight % of chromium oxide relative to the weight of the catalyst in terms of Cr2O3. By contacting mixed gas obtained through partial oxidation of heavy oil and/or coal with the decomposing catalyst, COS and HCN contained in the mixed gas are decomposed/removed. In this case, transition of alumina into boehmite can be suppressed owing to coexistence of silica and chromium oxide, so that COS and HCN can be decomposed by highly active catalytic reactions over a long time.

On imprègne d'une solution de composés de chrome un support de silice/alumine dans laquelle: la silice représente de 1 à 5 % en poids du poids total de manière à obtenir un catalyseur de décomposition comportant de 10 à 15 % de son poids total d'oxyde de chrome Cr¿2?O¿3?. En mettant en contact un gaz mixte obtenu par oxydation partielle d'huiles lourdes et/ou de charbon, avec le catalyseur de décomposition on décompose/élimine le COS et le HCN contenus dans ledit gaz. On peut ainsi éviter la transformation transitoire de l'alumine en boehmite, en raison de la coexistence de la silice et de l'oxyde de chrome, la transformation transitoire de l'alumine en boehmite et obtenir la décomposition du COS et du HCN lors de réactions catalytiques à forte activité de longue durée.
