The invention relates to a process for the preparation of vinyl acetate in a gaseous phase from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen or gases containing oxygen while simultaneously forming low levels of high- boiling agents on a catalyst which contains palladium and/or the compounds thereof, gold and/or the compounds thereof and alkali metal compounds on a carrier. The process is characterised in that the catalyst also contains boron or boron compounds.
