ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Vanadium compound/orgdnometallic compound/inorganic oxide cata- lyst compositions useful for the polymerization of ethylene to polymers having an intermediate molecular weight distribution that can be predict- ably controlled by the use of a "tunable" variable are obtained by using, as the vanadium component, a mixture of about 10-90 mol percent of VOCl3 and, correspondingly, about 90-10 mol percent of VCl4. The molecular weight distributions of polymers formed in the presence of the catalyst compositions are narrowed as the proportionation of VCl4 in the vanadium component is increased.
