The invention involves a catalyst consisting of: a) a precious metal from Group VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements deposited on an inert support and having been used to dehalogenate alphahalogenated carboxylic acids in the presence of hydrogen; b) a precious metal from group VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements deposited on an inert support; the particle size of b is significantly smaller than that of a to permit the formation of a homogeneous mixture by the effect of currents of alphahalogenated carboxylic acid and hydrogen. The invention is particularly useful in regenerating palladium catalysts used to purify crude monochloroacetic acid.
