ABSTRACT A catalyst useful for polymerizing an olefin comprising a com- ponent (A) and an organometal component (B), the component (A) being prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon-soluble organomagnesium compound (i)- (a) of the formula Image wherein R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon groups and at least one of R1 and R2 is a secondary or tertiary alkyl group having 4 to 6 carbon atoms or R1 and R2 are alkyl groups with a dif- ferent number of carbon atoms or at least one of R1 and R2 is a hydrocarbon group having at least 6 carbon atoms, X1 is an electronegative group containing o, N or S, O ? u ? 2, O ? v ? 2, O ? w ? 1, u + v + w = 2, or a hydrocarbon-soluble organomagnesium complex compound (i)-(b) of the formula Image wherein M1 is a metal of the 1st to 3rd groups of the Periodic Table, R3 and R4 each independently is a hydrocarbon group, X2 and Y1 each independently is OR5, OSiR6R7R8, NR9R10 or SR11 wherein R5, R6, R7, R8, R9 and R10 each independent- ly is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group and R11 is a hydrocarbon group, .alpha. and .beta. each independently is a number greater than zero, p, q, r and s each independently is zero or a number greater than zero, p + q + r + s = ma + 2.beta., m is the valence of M1, with (ii) a halogen compound of the formula, Image wherein L is a boron, silicon, germanium, tin, lead, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, mercury or tellurium metal, J is a halogen atom, R12 is a hydrocarbon group, a is the valence of L O < j ? a, and contacting the solid product of [(i)-(a) or (i)-(b)] + (ii) with (iii) a compound of titanium or vanadium having at least one halogen atom.
