ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a catalyst for removing nitric oxides from dust-contaminated combustion waste gases by means of ammonia which is formed of an easily disposable material, and is consumed as far as possible during the catalysis. The catalyst is built up of individual ceramic shaped elements with a porous surface and with passages through which the waste gas can flow. The shaped elements have an abrasion resistance which is selected such that the dust of the waste gas flowing through the passages abrades away the cata- lyst surface, the abraded material being carried along by the dust.
