ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A catalyst for oxidation of carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, or sulfur dioxide comprises a mixture of, by weight, 45 to 75% manganese dioxide, 15 to 25% calcium aluminate, 5 to 15% iron oxyhydroxide, and 2 to 20% copper hydroxycarbonate. To prepare the catalyst, water is added to the mixture which is then formed into a body of desired shape and cured preliminarily in air and then in the presence of water e.g. in steam, to solidify the body. The solidified body can also be heated at a temperature between 220°C and 850°C for 1 to 5 hours.
