A catalyst for the oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane is prepared by impregnating a .gamma.-alumina support with a magnesium salt, drying the product, and impregnating the product with a copper salt, preferably together with a lithium salt. The catalyst preferably contains 0.1 to 5 % magnesium, 2 to 10 % copper and 0 to 5 % lithium, by weight, and is particularly effective in oxygen-based processes.
L'invention concerne un catalyseur pour l'oxychloration de l'éthylène en 1,2-dichloroéthane, préparé selon les étapes suivantes : imprégnation d'un support en .gamma.-alumine avec un sel de magnésium, séchage du produit, et imprégnation dudit produit avec un sel de cuivre, de préférence en présence d'un sel de lithium. De préférence, le catalyseur renferme, en poids, entre 0,1 et 5 % de magnésium, entre 2 et 10 % de cuivre et entre 0 et 5 % de lithium, et il est particulièrement efficace dans les procédés à base d'oxygène.
