ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of manufacturing a device for use in the treatment of fluid and in particular a supported catalyst for motor vehicle exhaust gas purification. For this, short lengths of wire of an aluminium containing iron based alloy with a smooth surface free from edges or sharp corners are wound into helical coil components in which contact between adjacent turns of the wire in the helical coil is avoided. The helical coil components are contacted with a dispersion in a liquid medium of a refractory material and a catalytic material. Excess liquid is removed by shaking followed by drying and firing and assembling the components in a container having inlet and outlet gas passageways.
