ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the production of maleic anhydride from benzene employing a molybdenum-vanadium-oxygen oxidation catalyst, addition of a volatilizable compound of a phosphorus halide or an organo phosphorus compound is added to the catalyst to deactivate a portion of the catalyst whereby progressive non- selectivity of a portion of the catalyst resulting in a de- crease in anhydride yield is overcome and high yields of anhydride are maintained.
