Catalyst consisting of a reaction product with at least one organomagnesium and/or organo lithium-containing compound of formula R<1>Li (R<1>=alkyl) or ArLi (Ar=phenyl or benzyl), of the reaction product of a compound of formula (Cp)2MX2Li(OR2)2(M=lanthanide, scandium, yttrium; (Cp)=optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl; and R=alkyl), with at least one bidentate ligand, such as beta -dicetone or beta -ketone imine of formula CZ3COCHZCDCZ3, Z being selected from halogen, alkyl and H, D=O, NH or NR<3> (R=alkyl or aryl); and phosphorus ylide R<2>3P=CA-CO-R<2>, R<2> being selected from alkyl and aryl; A=alkyl or H. Advantageously said catalyst can be in solution form containing, at least partially, an aromatic hydrocarbon. The ethylene polymerization process can be carried out at a temperature in the range of 20 DEG -250 DEG C, at a pressure of up to approximately 200 bars, in solution or in suspension in an at least C6 inert hydrocarbon or can be continuously carried out, in at least one autoclave or tubular reactor, at a temperature in the range of 150 DEG -300 DEG C, and at a pressure ranging from 400-2000 bars, the reactional medium being in a hypercritical state.

Ce catalyseur consiste en le produit de réaction, avec au moins un composé organomagnésien et/ou organolithien R1Li(R1 = alkyle) ou Arli (Ar= phényle ou benzyle), du produit de réaction (Cp)2MX2Li(OR2)2 (M = lanthanide, Sc, Y; (Cp)=cyclopentadienyle éventuellement substitué; et R=alkyle), avec au moins un ligand bidentate, tel que .beta.-dicétone ou .beta.-cétone imine CZ3COCHZCDCZ3, Z choisis parmi halogène, alkyle et H, J=O, NH ou NR3 (R3=alkyle ou aryle); et ylure de phosphore R2 3P=CA-CO-R2, R2 choisis parmi alkyle et aryle; A=alkyle ou H. Il se présente avantageusement sous la forme d'une solution contenant, au moins partiellement, un hydrocarbure aromatique. Le procédé de polymérisation de l'éthylène peut être mis en oeuvre à 20°-250 °C, sous une pression pouvant aller jusqu'à 200 bars environ, en solution ou en suspension dans un hydrocarbure inerte au moins en C6 ou être mis en oeuvre en continu, dans au moins un réacteur autoclave ou tubulaire, à 150°-300 °C, sous 400-2000 bars, le milieu réactionnel étant à l'état hypercritique.
