82 PROMOTED CATALYSTS AND PROCESSES USEFUL IN PRODUCING 1,3-DIOLS AND/OR 3-HYDROXYALDEHYDES Abstract of the Invention A process for producing a 1,3-diol, e.g., 1,3- propanediol, and/or a 3-hydroxyaldehyde, e.g., 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde, is disclosed which comprises contacting a combination of an epoxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium-containing catalyst composition effective to promote the hydroformylation of the epoxide at conditions effective to form at least one of a 1,3- diol and a 3-hydroxyaldehyde. The rhodium-containing catalyst composition comprises an anionic rhodium-containing complex. A promoter component is preferably provided to enhance at least one of the rate and selectivity of the epoxide hydroformylation reaction.
