Disclosed is a novel compound of the formula: Image (wherein n = m + 1; 1 >= m/n > 0; 1 >= 0; p > 0; r > 0; q = 1 or 2; R is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl radical having up to 16 C atoms or two R groups are linked together via an alkylene bridge; R1 is R, Si(R)3 or -CO-NR-R3; R2 is H or R or R1 and R2 may be linked via an alkylene bridge; R3 is R or Si(R)3; and X~ is an onium cation (R4)4E~ in which E is N or P; and R4 is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aryl radical having up to 20 carbon atoms), which is useful as a catalyst in a process for preparing a polyisocyanate containing an isocyanurate group.
