Abstract The performance of a catalyst for the oxidation of alkenes to alkylene oxides which comprises silver on alpha alumina is improved by introducing an alkali metal selected from lithium, sodium, rubidium and/or potassium to the catalyst in a ratio of one part chemically absorbed to at most three parts physically absorbed by impregnation with a solution of an alkali metal compound in a solvent which has dielectric constant of at most 8.
