CATALYTIC COMBUSTOR HAVING SPIRAL SHAPE ABSTRACT The combustor comprises a single sheet of metal coated with catalyst and wound into a spiral. There is a single spiral passage leading into the core of the spiral. The fuel-air mixture burns on the catalyzed surface of the spiral, and heat is transferred through the metal wall of the spiral to the incoming fuel-air mixture. The incoming fuel-air mixture is preheated to a temperature sufficient to start the catalytic combustion. The fuel content in the mixture can be below the flammability limit. The com- bustor is compact so that it can be used as a catalytic air preheater in a downhole steam generator,
