"CATALYTIC COMPOSITION FOR THE ISOMERIZATION OF PARAFFINIC HYDROCARBONS" ABSTRACT Superior hydrocarbon isomerization performance is obtained with a catalytic composite comprising a platinum group metal component and a hydrogen-form crystalline mordenite incorporated with a refractory inorganic oxide. The superior performance is a direct result of the catalyst composite having a surface area of at least 580 m2/g. A novel method of preparing an isomerization catalyst having a surface area of at least 580 m2/g is presented, along with a novel process for the isomerization of isomerizable hydrocarbons. A key advantage of the novel process is the ability to operate successfully in the presence of sulfur compounds in an amount corresponding to 5 to 200 wt. ppm of the hydrocarbon feed, calculated on an elemental sulfur basis.
