2120759 9307365 PCTABS00021 A catalytic converter is described having two or more matrices (10a, 10b) each defining passages for the exhaust gases and carrying particles of a catalyst. The matrices (10a, 10b) are arranged in series with one another in the direction of flow of exhaust gases through the converter. A chamber (16) disposed between the two matrices (10a, 10b) contains an igniter (18) for igniting the exhaust gases in the chamber to form an afterburner for heating the second of the matrices (10b) so as to reduce the time taken for the second of the two matrices to reach its light-off temperature.
