CATALYTIC DECOMPOSITION OF IMPURITIES IN METHYL TERTIARY BUTYL ETHER (Docket No. 81,083-F) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Motor-fuel grade methyl tertiary butyl ether which is prepared by reacting methanol with a tertiary butyl alcohol reaction product contaminated with residual amounts of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and ditertiary butyl peroxide can be effectively catalytically treated under mild conversion conditions including a temperature of about 180° to 280°C. with an iron oxide catalyst in order to substantially convert the peroxide contaminants and to thereby provide a treated methyl tertiary butyl ether product substantially free from contaminating quantities of such peroxides.
