A process is provided for hydrodealkylation of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons to produce benzene or BTX over catalyst comprising nickel or a noble metal and a synthetic zeolite, having in its calcined form, an X-ray diffraction pattern including interplanar d-spacings at 12.36 ~ 0.4, 11.03 ~ 0.2, 8.83 ~ 0.14, 6.18 ~ 0.12, 6.00 ~ 0.10, 4.06 ~ 0.07, 3.91 ~ 0.07 and 3.42 ~ 0.06 Angstroms.
