Ketones and aldehydes are hydrogenated to the corresponding alcohol of alkyl group, using H2 gas as the stoichiometric reductant, and a ruthenium- or iron- containing catalyst precursor having the formula {[CpM(CO)2]2(µ-H)}+Q-, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Ru and Fe; Cp is an optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl group; and Q- is a non-coordinating or weakly coordinating non-reactive anion.

Selon l'invention, les cétones et les aldéhydes sont hydrogénés au niveau du groupe d'alcool ou d'alkyle correspondant, par utilisation du gaz H¿2? comme réducteur, et de complexes de ruthénium organométalliques comme catalyseurs.
