A catalytic material comprises macrospheres consisting essentially of an acid-leached calcined layered clay mineral having a surface area of at least 100 m2/g and an average pore diameter of at least 20 Angstroms the macrospheres having a bulk density not above 10 g/cc The surface acidity is preferably at least 0.3 m mole H+/g and the free acidity is preferably at least 0.1%. The material may be produced by acid-treating a layered clay mineral followed by washing, balling and calcining. The material may be used to catalyse bromine index reductions, alkylations of phenols, alkylations of benzene or esterifications of alcohols.

Un matériau catalytique comprend des macrosphères se composant essentiellement d'un minéral argilacé disposé en couches, calciné, lessivé à l'acide, et ayant une aire de surface d'au moins 100 m<2>/g et un diamètre de pore moyen d'au moins 20 angströms, les macrosphères ayant une masse volumique inférieure à 1 g/cc. L'acidité de la surface est de préférence d'au moins 0,3 m mole H<+>/g et l'acidité libre est de préférence d'au moins 0,1 pourcent. Le matériau peut être obtenu par un traitement à l'acide d'un minéral argilacé disposé en couches, suivi d'un lavage, d'une agglomération et d'une calcination. Le matériau peut être utilisé pour catalyser des réductions d'indice de brome, des alkylations de phénols, des alkylations de benzène ou des estérifications d'alcool.
