ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE What is disclosed is a continuous method for the oxidation or hydrogenation of an organic compound by the heterogeneous catalytic conversion, in a reaction zone containing a solid catalyst, of a fresh gas con- taining oxygen and said organic compound in gaseous form, optionally together with an inert moderator gas, into a reaction gas containing oxidation or dehydro- genation products of said organic compound, which method comprises mixing a portion of said reaction gas leaving said reaction zone with said fresh gas and introducing the resulting gas mixture into said reaction zone with a mechanically-driven circulating device at an inlet temperature less than the temperature required for said conversion, and wherein not more than 12 parts by volume of moderator gas are used per volume of said gaseous organic compound.
