A process and catalyst are disclosed for the catalytic partial oxidation of light hydrocarbons to produce synthesis gas. The process involves contacting a feed stream comprising the hydrocarbon feedstock and an oxygen-containing gas with a catalyst in a reaction zone maintained at conversion-promoting conditions effective to produce an effluent stream comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of about 2:1 H2:CO. A preferred supported catalyst used in the process includes nickel and magnesium oxide, with a promoter selected from the group including manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, tin, rhenium, bismuth, indium, phosphorus, and combinations thereof.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un catalyseur permettant l'oxydation catalytique partielle d'hydrocarbures légers afin de produire des gaz de synthèse. Ce procédé consiste à mettre un flux d'alimentation comprenant une charge d'hydrocarbures et un gaz contenant de l'oxygène en contact avec un catalyseur, dans une zone de réaction maintenue dans des conditions favorisant une conversion efficace, de façon à produire un flux d'effluents comprenant du monoxyde de carbone et de l'hydrogène selon un rapport molaire de H¿2?/CO d'environ 2/1. Un support de catalyseur préféré utilisé dans le procédé comprend du nickel et de l'oxyde de magnésium, associés à un promoteur sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par le manganèse, le molybdène, le tungstène, l'étain, le rhénium, le bismuth, l'indium, le phosphore, et des combinaisons de ceux-ci.
