ABSTRACT A method for the preparation of oxygenated hydrocarbons which comprises contacting a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal component supported on tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide, the amount of Group VIII metal component being in the range of from 0.01 to 20 weight percent based on the combined weight of the Group VIII metal component and support.
