PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: L'invention concerne un procédé catalytique de production de soufre à partir d'un gaz acide renfermant H2S, dans lequel on oxyde catalytiquement une partie de l'H2S pour former un effluent renfermant H2S et SO2 dans un rapport molaire 2:1 et une certaine quantité de soufre, puis on amène ledit effluent au contact d'un catalyseur CLAUS pour former une nouvelle quantité de soufre. Le catalyseur d'oxydation consiste en un support poreux d'oxyde réfractaire d'aire spécifique d'au moins 5 m2/g auquel on a associé un ou plusieurs composé de métaux tels que Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mo, W, Co, Ni, Bi, et éventuellement un ou plusieurs métaux précieux. Ce procédé est parti- culièrement intéressant pour produire du soufre à partir de gaz acides renfermant 0,5 à 20% d'H2S en volume.
