PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: L'invention concerne un procédé catalytique pour la production de soufre à partir d'un gaz acide renfermant H2S, dans lequel on oxyde catalytiquement une partie de l'H2S pour former un effluent renfermant H2S et SO2 dans un rapport molaire 2:1 et une certaine quantité de soufre, puis on amène ledit effluent au contact d'un catalyseur CLAUS pour former une nouvelle quantité de soufre. Le catalyseur d'oxydation consiste en un support poreux, à base d'alumine stabilisée par au moins un oxyde choisi parmi les oxydes de terres rares, SiO2, ZrO2, et les oxydes alcalino-terreux, d'aire spécifique d'au moins 5 m2/g auquel on a associé un ou plusieurs composés de métaux tels que Fe, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mo, W, Co, Ni, Bi, et éventuellement un ou plusieurs métaux précieux choisis parmi Pd, Pt, Ir et Rh. Ce procédé est particulièrement intéressant pour produire du soufre à partir de gaz renfermant moins de 25 % d'H2S en volume.
