ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A phenol is produced by heating water and a cyclic or acyclic alkane or alkene of 6-10 carbon atoms at a temperature of 350 to 700°C in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst. The process preferably is operated with two or more metal oxides as catalysts and in the absence of air.
