ABSTRACT A process is provided for converting carbonaceous material and water into hydrocarbons, particularly methane, comprising the step of contacting the carbonaceous material with a gaseous mixture comprising inert gas at a partial pressure of about one atmosphere and water vapor at a partial pressure of less than about 1000 Torr, particularly less than 100 Torr, at a temperature in the range of 450-900°K in the presence of a catalytic material selected from an alkali metal hydroxide, alkali metal carbonate or alkali metal.
