Disclosed are methods for regulating formation of beta-amyloid protein with inhibitors of proteases specific for the Precursor to the Alzheimer's Disease beta-amyloid protein, such as inhibitors of aspartic protease, cathepsin D, and a chymotryptic-like serine protease; a method for detecting in vitro protease activity for molecules which possess specificity necessary for the degradation of the Amyloid Precursor Protein; assays for identifying inhibitors of proteases specific for the Amyloid Precursor Protein; and identified inhibitors and their use as therapeutics for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.
