The present invention relates generally to a catheter having a torque transmitting shaft which retains adequate flexibility. The catheter includes an elongate shaft (12) having an outer surface (20). In a preferred embodiment, a raised pattern (24) is disposed on the outer surface (20). Preferably, the raised pattern (24) improves the transmission of torque along the elongate shaft by including a series of bearing points (26) which contact other bearing points along the shaft when torqued.
