A catheter system for imaging wherein optical fibers within a catheter are used to illuminate tissue for diagnostic purposes. Both spectroscopic and visual displays of the tissue are generated simul- taneously. Fluorescence and Raman spectra are used to determine the presence of atheromateous plaques on artery walls.
