2081669 9117582 PCTABS00008 A method of forming a cathode structure for a sodium sulphur cell uses sheets of electrically conductive fibrous material which have fibres predominantly extending parallel to one plane. A sheet of the fibrous material is cut into a plurality of strips which are then assembled to form at least one sheet-like structure in which the fibres predominantly have a component of direction normal to the plane of the sheet-like structure. The structure is shaped and compressed to form at least one cathode component, which component comprises at least a section of the required shape of the cathode structure. The compressed component is impregnated with a cathodic reactant.
