A cathode composition for lithium ion and lithium metal batteries includes a transitional metal oxide and an adsorbate layer disposed on a surface of the transitional metal oxide. The transitional metal oxide and the adsorbate layer are both electrochemically active. A method of forming cathode materials for lithium ion and lithium metal batteries includes the steps of providing reagents including at least one elemental chalcogenide or chalcogenic oxide and a transitional metal oxide. The reagents are heated, wherein a cathode composition is formed having a chalcogenic complex adsorbed to a bulk material, the bulk material being a modification of the transitional metal oxide. The transitional metal oxide is preferably a vanadium oxide.

L'invention concerne une composition cathodique pour batteries lithium-ion et lithium-métal, constituée d'un oxyde de métal de transition et d'une couche d'adsorbat disposée sur une surface de l'oxyde de métal de transition, cet oxyde de métal de transition et la couche d'adsorbat étant tous deux électrochimiquement actifs. Ladite invention concerne également un procédé de formation de matériaux cathodiques pour batteries lithium-ion et lithium-métal, consistant à utiliser des réactifs contenant au moins un chalcogénure ou oxyde chalcogénique élémentaire et un oxyde de métal de transition. Ces réactifs sont chauffés puis une composition cathodique, contenant un complexe chalcogénique adsorbé sur un matériau en vrac, est formée, lequel matériau en vrac est une modification de l'oxyde de métal de transition. Cet oxyde de métal de transition est, de préférence, un oxyde de vanadium.
