PHN 10 488 11 ABSTRACT: "Cathode-ray tube." The spot quality of a cathode-ray tube can be considerably improved. For that purpose said tube com- prises in an evacuated envelope means to generate at least one electron beam and to form a cross-over behind which, viewed in the direction of propagation of the electron beam, are provided successively an accelerating pre- focusing lens comprising a first and second lens elec- trode centred around an axis, and a main focusing lens comprising at least two lens electrodes, said cathode- ray tube comprising means for applying electrical vol- tages to the lens electrodes, the diameter of the aper- ture in the second lens electrode being smaller than twice the diameter of the aperture in the first lens electrode, the effective spacing S-eff between the first and the second lens electrodes being smaller than 1 mm, S-eff being defined as the minimum of the function Image .DELTA. V is the voltage difference between the second and first lens electrodes and E(z) is the electrical field strength between the first and second lens electrodes on the axis as a function of the place z on the axis.
