ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of preparing cation exchange membranes having good current efficiency and durability comprising a fluorocarbon polymer having pendant carboxylic acid groups of the formula -- OCF2COOM --, where M is selected from hydrogen, ammonium, quaternary ammonium and metallic atoms, by treating with a reducing agent a starting membrane comprising a corresponding fluorocarbon polymer containing sulfonyl groups.
