The invention relates to new cationic biopolymers with an average molecular weight of 800,000 to 1,200,000 Dalton, a Brookfield viscosity (1% by weight in glycolic acid) below 5,000 mPas, a degree of deacetylation of 80 to 88% and an ash content of less than 0.3% by weight which are obtained by repeatedly subjecting crustacean shells to alternate acidic and alkaline degradation under defined conditions. Compared with known cationic biopolymers of the chitosan type, the new biopolymers form clear solutions and, at the same time, show excellent film-forming properties, despite their high molecular weight.

On décrit de nouveaux biopolymères cationiques avec un poids moléculaire moyen de 800.000 à 1.200.000 Daltons, une viscosité selon Brookfield (1 % en poids dans de l'acide glycolique) en dessous de 5000 mPa.s, un degré de désacétylation dans la plage de 80 à 88 % et une teneur en cendres inférieure à 0,3 % en poids. Ces biopolymères sont obtenus à partir de carapaces de crustacés, soumises alternativement à plusieurs attaques acides et alcalines, effectuées dans des conditions bien déterminées. Par comparaison avec les biopolymères cationiques connus du type chitosan et en dépit de leur poids moléculaire élevé, ces polymères peuvent former des solutions limpides et ont, en même temps, une excellente aptitude à former des films.
