Abstract of the Disclosure The specification discloses new cationic flocculants which are prepared by the polycondensation of an epihalohydrin and the Mannich reaction products of phenol or cresol, formaldehyde, and a dialkylamine. More particularly the flocculants are water-soluble polycondensates of an eiphalo- hydrin and an amine represented by the formula: Image ...,.. (I) wherein y represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; R1 R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are the same or different and each represents lower alkyl; ?, m and n are O or 1 respectively, with the proviso that ?, m and n are not all O at the same time; or a mixture of the amine (a) and at least one other compound selected from the group (b) consisting of ammonia, monoalkylamines, dialkylamines, alkylenediamines, aromatic amines, polyalkyl- enepolyamines, and cyclic amines, the amine (a) being contained in an amount of more than 50 mole % of the total of the amines (a) and (b). As an alternative the amine may be a mixture of the compound above with less than 50 mole % of another amine or ammonia. The flocculants are useful for the flocculation of various kinds of suspensions, such as various industrial waste waters, pulp slurry in paper making and the like.
