ABSTRACT A cell construction for electrolysers and fuel cells, has a diaphragm that is permeable to electrolyte, metallic elec- trodes that are permeable to the electrolyte on both sides of the diaphragm, an electrically conductive bipolar cell separator wall that defines the cell, an electrically conductive structure be- tween the electrodes and the cell separator walls that acts as an elastic separator and current feed, and a frame construction that encloses the cell around its periphery. The diaphragm is made as a flat plate. The layer-like electrodes are immediately adjacent to the diaphragm or are connected integrally with it. The cell separator walls are of sheet metal, optionally with separators. The spaces between the electrodes and the cell separator walls are filled at least in part with lamellar structures that are perme- able to fluid both axially and vertically and which are adjacent to the electrodes. The lamellar structures consist of a plurality of wall elements that are spaced a short distance apart, with interposed spacers.
