The location of a mobile unit M of a cellular radio system is determined by determining the differences in timing of a characteristic feature of the transmission of the control channel of each base station A, B, C, D, E as measured at the mobile unit. Preferably the characteristic feature is the training sample already used by the mobile unit in cellular systems to measure signal strength in order to inform handover decisions. By determining the differences between time of arrival of transmissions from four base stations A, B, C, D, position in two dimensions can be derived without prior knowledge of the actual distance to any of the base stations. A fifth base station E allows position in three dimensions to be determined.

Cette invention concerne la définition de l'emplacement d'une unité mobile M d'un système cellulaire radio, laquelle définition est effectuée en déterminant les différences de synchronisation d'une caractéristique de transmission du canal de commande de chaque station de base A, B, C, D, E lorsque ladite caractéristique est mesurée au niveau de l'unité mobile. Cette caractéristique est de préférence l'échantillon d'entraînement déjà utilisé par l'unité mobile dans des systèmes cellulaires afin de mesurer la force du signal et de donner des informations sur des décisions de transfert. En déterminant les différences entre les temps d'arrivée des transmissions depuis quatre stations de base A, B, C, D, il est possible de déterminer l'emplacement en deux dimensions de l'unité mobile avant même de connaître la distance réelle jusqu'à chacune des stations de base. Une cinquième station de base E permet de déterminer la position en trois dimensions.
