The invention disclosed relates to a method for the cellular-scale encapsulation of microparticles. An aqueous suspension of the microparticles and a polymer precursor is first formed. To the suspension is added a dispersion medium containing an emulsifier. Vigorous agitation results in the formation of a suspension of stable microscopic globules including the microparticles and the polymer precursor. The suspension is added to an aqueous polymerization catalyst to precipitate the globules and form polymer encapsulated microparticles. Also disclosed are cellular- scale encapsulated microparticles, such as fungal propagules, which are useful e.g. as an artificial spore.
