- 1 - Abstract: A cellular type robot apparatus consists of a plurality of robot cells each having intelligence. Each cell controls its own operation on the basis of information exchange with adjacent cells The operations of the cells as a whole are coordinated, and each cell can be controlled without a need to change hardware or software, even when one or more of the cells are out of order or when the robot needs to be expanded. Each cell has arms corresponding to hands and feet and can control its own operation. As the cells are connected and combined through transmission routes so as to be able to exchange information, they can operate cooper- atively as a group to perform a manipulative action. The operation of the group can involve determining the shape of a predetermined pattern or can involve entwining an object and gripping and moving it.
