ABSTRACT OF THE DISLOSURE Cellulose products such as paper are modified to give improved properties and particularly higher wet and dry strengths and chemical resistance by impregnating them with an aqueous solution of monomeric and oligomeric silicic acids having a pH of 1 to 5, preferably 1.5 to 3.0, and a concentration of 3 to 15% SiO2. The silicic acids are then partially poly- condensated to give a hydrated cellulose-polysilicic acid structure which, on drying under pH control, develops a capil- lary structure into which residual silicic acid oligomers are soaked up and there polymerized. A binding material such as rubber or plastic emulsion or cement can be added to the product prior to the final drying stage during which the material is soaked up In the capillary structure. A buffering agent is usefully present in the impregnant to control and increase the pH value during the dryign and final polymerization stage.
