A multi-phase cemented ceramic material useful for metal working, including ferrous metals, titanium, aluminum and other metals. The material preferably has a microstructure which includes platelets, a range of grain sizes which yields superior hardness and other characteristics, and a low tungsten concentration within the binder phase. The preferred composition includes ultrafine WC, an ultrafine solid solution of (Ti, Ta, W)C, and a cobalt binder. Platelets are formed in situ, eliminating the need to add them during manufacture for improving toughness.

Un matériau céramique cémenté, multiphase, utilisé dans la transformation des métaux, comprend des métaux ferreux, du titane, de l'aluminium et d'autres métaux. Le matériau a de préférence une microstructure comprenant des lamelles, une granulométrie qui confère une dureté supérieure et d'autres caractéristiques et une faible concentration de tungstène dans la phase liante. La composition préférée comprend du carbure de tungstène (WC) ultrafin, une solution solide ultrafine de (Ti, Ta, W)C et un liant de cobalt. Des lamelles sont formées in situ, ce qui évite de les ajouter au cours de la fabrication et permet d'améliorer la dureté.
