2104284 9215006 PCTABS00015 The invention is directed to centering devices for use with Brinell hardness measuring instruments, particularly electro-optical instruments. Such instruments include an electro-optical probe (114) coupled by appropriate flexible cabling (115) with an associated processor which may include a display and a keyboard (19) interface. The probe includes one or more illumination sources (119) in a housing (116) with at least some of the optics of the instrument. The housing has an aperture (120) at one end of the probe which is aligned at least generally with the central axis (124) of the probe optics to provide to the probe optics a field of view of the specimen surface when the one end of the probe is located against the specimen surface (120). One centering device includes a spiderlike mechanical centering structure (40) protruding through the probe end opening. Another centering device includes a source (134) which develops a beam (140) of coherent or non-coherent light in the visible spectrum which is directed through the opening at the one end of the probe to permit an operator to align the probe.
